A ‘new’ coach house

A radical remodelling, retrofit and extension of a historic coach house in South London.

This two storey house was carefully designed to sympathetically juxtapose its historic adjoining ‘host’ property. A tough planning process resulted in a reimagining of the front facade - ‘up-cycling’ the existing brickwork demolished and using it to provide a contemporary, yet characterful two storey house.

The existing walls of the coach house were largely retained, and the lightweight timber-framed additional floor was possible without altering the existing foundations. This retrofit-first approach was a more cost effective and sustainable solution to the site, rather than simply building a new house from scratch.

Utilising a vast volume of space internally - the house playfully uses height to provide scale and drama - including a glass covered six meter high void and its centre, bringing an abundance of natural light into a deep, long floor plan.

The additional storey is timber frame construction, with an exposed glulam + birch plywood structure internally.
